HOME HEALTH

One of the most important ingredients in a happy life as a person with a disability is having good home health care, whether you need help a few hours a day or around the clock. Your home health care providers are people you will have an intimate relationship with, so it is important that you're comfortable with them.

Resources and Tips on Hiring Home Health Care

  • Call independent living centers - they have databases of aids in your area and are great advocates for people with disabilities. They also have literature on hiring, firing, training and managing your employees.
  • Talk to your social worker - he or she can refer you to agencies that provides the level of care you need.
  • Talk to your doctor, physical therapist, or medical supplier - they might have other patients/clients with aids that are looking for additional employment.
  • Classified ads - this is a great source because you get a large response, but make sure you screen any potential employees by doing background and reference checks.
  • Colleges and universities - most have student career centers where you can place a 'help wanted' ad for free.

A word of advice - Remember that you deserve and are entitled to the best care; DON'T SETTLE FOR LESS!!
